        Pioneering change through historical insights

The Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” – National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of
Belgrade (IBISS) represents a pillar of biological, biomedical, and cancer research in Southeast Europe. As the largest
multidisciplinary biological sciences research institution in Serbia, IBISS’s history, structure, and ongoing scientific
output encapsulate more than seven decades of academic excellence, social impact, and international collaboration.
The establishment of IBISS in 1947 was the result of a critical post-World War II initiative to consolidate and revive the
scientific potential of Serbia’s academic community.

research in the country, recommended forming a unified biological research institute. Accordingly, the Academy
convened a conference of biologists in January 1947 to evaluate the feasibility and necessity. This pivotal gathering
