IBISS is dedicated to making scientific knowledge accessible and promoting scientific literacy. For more than a decade,
the institute has played a leading role in Serbia’s European Researchers’ Night, engaging thousands of visitors through
interactive exhibits and live demonstrations—many spotlighting advances in oncology.
Recently, IBISS introduced an interactive Q&A showcase in which scientists respond to questions gathered from
previous public events. By turning complex research into approachable dialogue, this format demystifies science for
young audiences and reinforces the institute’s reputation for clear, engaging communication.
IBISS researchers regularly appear across TV and radio programs, podcasts, and livestreams to offer expert insight on
pandemic preparedness, climate change, cancer prevention, and nutrition. Their contributions span regional science
shows, local news segments, and interdisciplinary podcasts that explore where science meets art and society.
While IBISS has successfully modernized its core research infrastructure, several challenges remain: limited industrial
and technology transfer linkages, which IBISS aims to address through expanded partnerships and more patent
applications; funding constraints in accessing the latest laboratory resources, genomics, and personalized medicine
platforms, a reality for most public research institutes in the region; and need for expanded internationalization and
increased participation of EU-funded consortia - recognized as strategic priorities by current leadership.
IBISS has evolved into a globally respected research institute for biological sciences and cancer research. Its history is a
testament to visionary leadership, perseverance, and scientific excellence through societal and technological upheaval.
Today, IBISS stands as Serbia’s flagship multidisciplinary research institute, combining strengths in fundamental biology,
biomedical science, and data-driven cancer research.
Its organizational scale with specialized departments, a highly educated research staff, and modern infrastructure,
positions IBISS at the cutting edge of translational and applied science in Southeast Europe. Through the scientific
achievements of key researchers, patenting and technology transfer activities, and high-impact publications, IBISS not
only advances discovery but also shapes clinical practice, locally through national clinical collaborations, and globally
by contributing to international clinical trials and research alliances.
Looking ahead, IBISS’s proactive strategy of merging academic excellence with commercialization, training, and global
partnership building will continue to amplify its impact. As a result, IBISS is set to remain a nucleus of innovation,
education, and public benefit for Serbia and the broader international scientific community.
